Verruca/Planter Warts
What is a Verruca?
A Verruca is another name for a wart that occurs on the sole of the foot. They are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV) and appear as small lumps which may be painful and in others, entirely symptom free. Verrucae often have a rough, grainy appearance and may be covered by a build-up of hard skin. They can often present with dark brown / black dots within them (tiny capillary bleeds), but it is important to note that this is not always the case. The most diagnostic sign is a deviation of the dermatoglyphics (skin lines) around the lesion.
Do I have to treat them?
Treatment is not always needed, and for young children we often opt for a 'wait and see' approach.
Whilst verrucae may spontaneously resolve on their own, this may take months or years and potentially can spread to other body parts and to other people. At The Clare Podiatry Centre we use a combination of therapies to resolve these stubborn lesions.
Generally, over the counter treatments are successful if you catch the lesion in time, however, occasionally you may need our expertise.
Your podiatrist will assess your skin lesion and develop a treatment plan based on your lifestyle and treatment needs.
Verruca Treatment's We Provide

Salicylic Acid
Salicylic acid 60% is a widely used and effective treatment for verrucae (plantar warts). It works by softening the thickened skin and breaking down the wart tissue, stimulating the immune system to fight the virus

Verrutop
Verrutop is a unique combination which is formulated with Nitrizinc Complex, a solution containing nitric acid, organic acids, zinc and copper salts. It is a topical solution based on Nitrizinc Complex® for treating skin, palmoplantar and periungual warts and condylomata. This formulation is applied directly to the wart, causing it to dehydrate and peel away over time. Unlike some treatments that rely on extreme temperatures or aggressive chemicals, Verrutop works by breaking down the protein structure of the wart, leading to a natural shedding of the affected skin

Verruca Needling
Verruca needling is an effective minor surgical procedure used to treat stubborn verrucae, especially those resistant to other treatments.
